FOCUS CONTROL

Does it work with RAVEN, RED ONE, what about my 1st gen iPhone ?

foolcontrol works with WEAPON, SCARLET-W and RAVEN built in wifi.

It also works with EPIC, SCARLET, DRAGON... using wired GIG-E cable + wifi router, using a REDLink Bridge module or a 3rd party wifi bridge like OffHollywood's HotLink, Teradek COLR...

It is not compatible with RED ONE cameras.

It runs on OS X 10.8 or newer with a camera Firmware above 5.2

Can I try the app without a camera ?

Most of the items in foolcontrol are  camera dependent (based on model, current state, accessories...) so running it alone would require a real camera simulator that can respond in real time to user's actions.

So you need to be able to connect (remotely or locally) to a RED camera to use foolcontrol.

How can I get a better range with wifi ?

It is always recommended to use a wifi router on set between the camera(s) and the iOS device when possible. Infrastructure mode let's you connected to an existing network and allows for a more robust signal compared to Ad hoc. You can also change the antenna on most modules for stronger one.

I am having unreliable wifi connections...

Very often it is required to try on another wifi channel if you run into disconnect issues with foolcontrol.

An OS X app like wifi scanner lets you easily monitor the surrounding networks and can help find the best channel to use wherever you are shooting.

On an iPhone it is also recommended to enable Airplane mode then activate only wifi and keep cellular connection off.

What about long range ?

RTMotion will soon release a new product named LATITUDE that will allow wifi and long range radio (1.5 KM) foolcontroling, along with hand unit, thumbwheels and external motor support.

Which lenses are compatible with foolcontrol focus features ?

Any lens recognized by the camera as an AF lens or listed in RED DSMC operating guide should work with foolcontrol. To control focus using foolcontrol, the lens itself (physical switch) needs to be set to AF and the camera focus mode to 'MANUAL'.

Worth noting that most photo zoom are not parfocal and will not keep focus distance while zooming.

Can foolcontrol or other RCP apps display a live image from the camera ?

The RCP protocol only allows camera control. There is no image data transmitted to foolcontrol directly by the camera.

On OS X version,  with an (optional) BlackMagic Design video input (Decklink PCIe or UltraStudio thunderbolt product) you can monitor the image using SDI or HDMI input. foolcontrol can also  save small snapshot automatically on record start/stop or whenever a frame is tagged. A variable opacity overlay image can also be super-imposed over the video signal for VFX shot alignement.

Can we control multiple cameras ?

foolcontrol iOS can connect to a single camera at a time. You can create presets in app easily and reconnect to another camera on the same network to apply similar values if needed. If you connect cameras via GIG-E to a router you can also enable master / slave mode (camera to camera) then control the master with foolcontrol.

Upcoming foolcontrol server app, working in tandem with foolcontrol iOS / OS X will provide advanced multicamera options...

Hot to use a GIG-E connection with foolcontrol OS X ?

You will need to connect RED's GIG-E cable to the camera lemo and into a GIG-E router's RJ-45 LAN socket. Most domestic router will only support 10/100 speeds and are NOT compatible with RED's Ethernet implementation that does require 1000 / GIG-E speed.

Once both the Mac and camera are on same network (using DHCP) and the 'Enable external control' box is ticked in camera menu > Settings > Setup > Communication > Ethernet tab, foolcontrol will discover and connect to the camera.

Can I use a GIG-E cable without a router going directly into a computer running foolcontrol ?

Yes, you simply need a thunderbolt gig-e ethernet adapter along with RED's GIG-E cable.

On camera : menu > settings > setup > communication > ethernet tab

- 'enable DHCP' box

- check 'Enable external control' box

On computer : system preferences > network > ethernet

for the Thundebolt ethernet interface

configure IPv4 > Using DHCP

Click 'Apply'

Both devices should get a self assigned IP (169.254.xx.xx) and foolcontrol will then find the camera.

Can I use foolcontrol over the internet ?

If you connect your camera to a fixed or know IP address on your network, you can open a port on your wan router and redirect it to your camera IP port 1111. foolcontrol can then be connect to the external IP address of your network and control the camera from the other side of the world.

Which external control surface panels are supported by foolcontrol ?

All the tangent panels will work with foolcontrol : tangent elements (Tk, Mf, Kb, Bt), tangent wave, ripple and also tangent element VS virtual surface app. Key map setting is fully customizable via the tangent mapper app.

What is the difference between UNIVERSAL and CAMERA LOCKED licenses ?

Software functionalities are identical, but single camera owners can acquire a camera locked version of foolcontrol at a reduced price.

Camera locked licenses are great too because they can be installed on any number of computers if needed, so it's ideal for rentals as the client can use foolcontrol on their own computer if they want.

Universal license is not locked to any camera but can only be installed on a single computer (1 seat)

For locked licenses, I will need your camera PIN number, it should look like 102-xxx-xxx or 130-xxx-xxx (get it underneath the camera, from foolcontrol's connect window or in camera menu > settings > maintenance > system status  > camera info).

foolcontrol OS X  has a built in shortcuts help sheet.

foolcontrol is updated on a regular basis with new features or new camera, new firmware support.
